The variable Gender is constructed from either probabilistic name-based gender coding or collected from survey data. Before the survey, each respondent is assigned a probability of being female based on their first name using the Gender package in R, which compares a name to historical records from the U.S. Social Security Administration baby name data. If a respondent’s probability of being female is greater than 95%, then the variable Sex is coded as female. If a respondent’s probability of being female is less than 5%, then the variable Sex is coded as male. If neither of those thresholds is met (approximately 8% of the sample population), then a respondent is asked the following question during the survey.
